# Toilet Bowl Choke: What to Do, What Not to Do

 Short answer: Stop flushing, turn off the small valve that feeds the cistern, and plunge with a flange plunger: push slowly, pull sharply, several times. If nothing moves, stop, because the blockage is deeper than the bowl. Clearing it is simple work a handyman may do under PUB's rules; published 2026 rates run from S$60 to S$150.

## First: stop making it worse

Every flush adds water to a bowl that cannot drain. Stop flushing. If the water level is high, turn off the small valve on the pipe that feeds the cistern, usually behind or beside the toilet, so it cannot refill. 

## Plunge properly

A flange plunger (the kind with a soft lip that fits into the outlet) seals far better than a flat cup plunger. 

- Make sure the plunger is covered by water so it pushes water, not air.

- Seat it over the outlet and push down slowly to push the air out.

- Pull up sharply. The pull does most of the work.

- Repeat 10 to 15 times, then check whether the water drops.

If the water starts draining, flush once with the cistern valve turned back on and watch. 

## When to stop

Stop and get help if: 

- the water does not drop after a few rounds of plunging,

- the floor trap or the sink gurgles or backs up when you plunge or flush (the blockage is past the toilet), or

- something solid went down, such as a toy or a phone.

## Who can clear it

PUB lists clearing blockages in water closets and sanitary appliances among the simple works that do not need a PUB Licensed Plumber ([PUB](https://www.pub.gov.sg/Professionals/Requirements/Licensed-Plumbers/Plumbing-Works)). If the cause turns out to be a damaged sanitary pipe, replacing that pipe is regulated work for a Licensed Plumber. 

## What it costs

Published rates read from eight Singapore plumbing firms’ websites (27 August 2026, re-checked 25 September 2026) range from S$60 to S$150 for a toilet bowl choke; one firm prices hand clearing at S$60 and machine clearing at S$120 to S$400 ([source](https://www.misslobang.com/article/best-plumbers-singapore-2026)). Some add a transport fee. Agree the total first, and ask whether the price is for a hand or a machine clear. 

## Stopping it happening again

- Only toilet paper and waste go down the toilet. Wet wipes labelled “flushable” do not break down like paper.

- Use less paper per flush, especially with low-flow cisterns.

- Keep a lid down if children are around small objects.
